ABOUT ME

My name is James Gilmartin and I am proud to be Yorkshire born and bred. I grew up in Otley, a small market town north of Leeds and spent a lot of my youth cycling around the amazing Yorkshire countryside.

I am a unique combination of a scientific, fact based core surrounded by a creative outer shell which resulted in an interest in everything from maths and computer science to media and psychology.

During my studies I met my wife Emma and convinced her to leave her life in Germany behind in order to start a new life here in Yorkshire. We were married in 2004 and currently share our house with 2 awesome little Jack Russell Terriers named Lottie and Loki.

Whether it is physical or mental, I love a challenge. As a result, I have walked over 270km of the Camino de Santiago and cycled the length of France on 6 occasions. Having completed this latest cycle in April I am now planning to fly back out in September to the end point in order to ride another 1000km over the Pyrenees and across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela.

CHARITY WORK

For over 2 decades I have been volunteering for an amazing charity named HCPT. The charity takes disabled and disadvantaged children to Lourdes, in the foothills of the Pyrenees. This week is not only an amazing holiday for the children but in many cases gives the parents some much needed respite. The charity sees approximately 5000 people from countries all around the world decend upon the pyrenean town.

Initially I travelled with a local group caring for the children but when the group stopped travelling I became invoved with the HQ team and now I spend the week ensuring that all of the audio/visual needs are met for the various celebrations throughout the week which culminates with a mass celebration attended by all 5000 people.

In 2011 the charity organised its 1st cycle fundraiser. The event sees cyclists ride over 850km from Paris down through France and all the way to Lourdes in the Pyrenees. The cycle occurs every 2 years and I am currently one of only 5 cyclists who have completed all 6 of the previous events. Unfortunately the 2019 ride had to be cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic that just made this year's ride even more special.

RECENT WORK

I currently work as a Senior UI/UX Designer at Surpass. The company makes a SaaS (software as a service) platform that is a market-leading professional end-to-end assessment platform used for the authoring, banking, administration, delivery, marking, and reporting of computer and paper-based tests.

I work closely with the users of the platform to identify pain-points and limitations that affect their ability to efficiently carry out their tasks. Together, we look at ways to improve the experience before then working as part of a Scrum team to refine and deliver new features.

Over the course of my career I have been fortunate enough to design and build some fantastic bespoke products for some of the worlds top brands. Below are a few examples of the kinds of projects that I worked on before I started my assessment platform journey.

PHOTO STUDIO

The PhotoStudio system is a full stand-alone photo booth solution that you can use wherever and whenever you want.

The smart recognition system has all the capabilities of a full green-screen setup without the need for the actual green-screen.

Custom designs can be incorporated into the app. Users can then snap and share their experiences digitally or print them out and take them away with them as a memento.

In addition, several bolt-on options have been developed such as the LED accessory which not only attracts attention but also syncs with the product to act as a camera flash for the best possible results.

ETCH STUDIO

The EtchStudio engraver makes it easy for you to add personalisation to any promotion.

The engraving system is designed to work with a wide range of materials, whatever your product there is a customisation option available to you.

The user-friendly, streamlined system allows for the whole process to be carried out in just a few minutes. This allows the customer to design, engrave and take away the product there and then.

The system is designed to work with different shapes and sizes of products and can engrave a multitude of materials including paper, leather, acrylic, glass and even metal.

CONTACTLESS CONTROL

The Contactless Control system can easily add interactivity to existing displays.

By using the users own mobile device to interact, we remove the need for shared touch-screens or buttons.

Due to covid-19, most of us are used to ordering our food and drink through the use of QR codes. The contactless control system expands on this by connecting the user with the CMS.

The users’ mobile device can control video playback, receive information or even play games on any screen in your system.

It can even be used by multiple users simultaneously to collaborate or compete.

POLYGON PETS

I have a real passion for creating things. To start with nothing and produce something unique and special is an amazing feeling.

In 2019 this led to me undertaking an art project. My goal was simple, to create some custom artwork of my dogs, past and present. Combining my interest in maths and art I decided upon polygon artwork.

The rules were simple - draw my dogs using nothing other than triangles and once I have done that I will stop.

At that point, friends began to make requests and so every now and then I add another pet to the collection. As a result I have decided to create a little gallery of the images.
